We have seen a massive growth in farm simulation games. If you watched the most recent Nintendo Direct, sim lovers such as myself were jumping for joy at a few games. Which I will most definitely be touching base on those at another time. I’m here for the newest game coming out Nov 4, 2022 called Harvestella. Square Enix is known for their Final Fantasy series of games in the RPG category. But lately they have been touching base and branching out to evolve their RPG’s into more than just RPG. Even if you play FFXIV online. They have opened up another side to simulation in their sanctuary islands for each individual player.
Harvestella can be found on Nintendo Switch and on Steam for PC for $59.99. Currently there is a prologue demo available on the Switch that will take you up to chapter 2 or 15 days in game time. When you start this demo it will save the progress you make. When the game does come out and you won’t have to play it over again. Let’s dive into a little bit more of what we can expect from Harvestella.
How does this pan out in the simulation games if Square Enix are known for the RPG’s? Harvestella is a FF meets ACNH (Animal Crossing New Horizons), meets Stardew Valley. There is action with fighting woodland creatures, a story line and quests you can do to level up your character, tools and equipment. The look of the game screams and speaks to Final Fantasy graphics, when I streamed the demo on Twitch the first comments were. “This is a beautiful game.” The simulation comes in when you get the ability to grow your own crops in a farm and unlock and care for farm animals and a house that is given to you and even fish. As you go out on paths and quests you will collect items from wood, iron and mining materials to even craft and cook. When You head to town there are shops such as the general store and Smithy; but keep in mind they close at 8pm, in game time and you need to be in bed by midnight. No, you won’t turn into a pumpkin but like Stardew you will pass out. I haven’t experienced it yet; I hope you don’t lose money or supplies. There is a village of people you will grow to learn, and these are the people you are helping to protect from Quietus.
When you first start off the game, after you go through your player customization. It’s simple but they do offer male, female and non-binary traits. You are passed out literally in the middle of nowhere and it’s very dark and gloomy. Noone will come outside. When you go up to a few houses the villagers even question why you are outside at such a harsh time. Quietus is the season of death that visits with every changing season and it seems to get longer and longer each time. Your job is to uncover this season of death, how to stop it and which world you will end up saving. It starts out very informative and it does bounce back and forth at first. It gives you a lot of contexts of what the story is building to then you’ll get free time to work on your farm, craft, see the village etc. It helps you stay on track with the story cutscenes, but you still get the relaxing time to do your life/farm simulation.
I’d say it’s a pretty good healthy balance of those who love stories and quests and then those who do enjoy the simulation side of games. I wont say too much so you can get the chance to play the demo or get the start of the adventure Nov 4th. If you’d like to see the game play please check the video as I start playing the prologue demo on the Nintendo Switch.
